Carmel Valley is distinct from the more coastal areas of Carmel, with landscapes filled with moss-draped oak trees, wild grasses, and meandering rivers lined with smooth stones, lavender, olive groves, and golf courses.  It has warmer temperatures than the coast, and has an Old West charm.  This setting provides an ideal backdrop for Bernardus Lodge, which has 73 guest rooms and suites. 


The Lodge’s history dates back to the late 19th century when it served as a working ranch, and today it stands as a triple Forbes-rated hotel, spa, and restaurant (each individually rated). It is an exceptional option for those seeking an indulgent escape that combines the rustic charm of Carmel Valley with the luxury and sophistication of a world-class resort.

Rooms are all designed with a soothing palette of earthy tones, floral accents, and rich wood furnishings; many standard rooms offer stunning views of the valley from private patios or balconies, while the suites provide additional space with sitting rooms, pullout sofas, and fire pits—perfect for evening relaxation.

The accommodations exude understated elegance, with thoughtful touches such as heated tile floors, marble finishes, and copper tubs in the spacious bathrooms. The ground-floor suites feature outdoor showers, connecting guests with the natural surroundings, while all suites include a spa pass for access to the steam room, pool, and showers. There is also an adults-only infinity jacuzzi for cooler days.

 

  1. Luxury Guest Rooms: These rooms offer a cozy limestone fireplace, a two-person soaking tub, and down feather bedding. Guests are welcomed with a gourmet snack basket, a fruit bowl, fresh roses, and a complimentary “wine grotto” mini bar stocked with Bernardus wines. Additional amenities include a flat-screen cable TV, iPod docking station, and a coffee machine. The bathrooms are equipped with heated tiles, marble finishes, and luxurious copper tubs. Outdoor showers are available on the ground floors. Each suite includes a spa pass, granting access to the steam room, pool, and showers. Approximately $800 - $1,200 per night, depending on the suite type and season.

  2. Two Bedroom Villas: These suites come with additional wellness amenities such as yoga mats, an emergency flashlight, and charming jewelry boxes in the bathroom.  Approximately $1,200 - $1,500 per night, depending on the suite type and season.

Bernardus Lodge is also known for its impeccable service (led by affable Travis Willis) with staff that go above and beyond; everyone I saw offered a smile. The property is pet-friendly, offering personalized amenities like dog bowls, beds, and gourmet treats. Additionally, the yucca- and succulent-accented grounds are meticulously maintained, with activities such as bocce, putting greens, and croquet available for leisurely afternoons. Both the Lodge’s main lawn and the rose garden provide picturesque settings for weddings or large events, while a conference room with a 200-person capacity offers an indoor option.

Let's not forget the special element of Carmel: its welcoming pet policy. After a day of exploring beaches, and hiking the Garland Ranch area nearby, pup has plenty of places to relax- mine thinks she is a princess.
